groundlings

i’ve gotten to eat my first two ripe ground cherries in the last week. you know they’re ripe when the husks turn yellow, dry out then fall to the ground. the flavor is strong and unusual, a cross between strawberries, tomatoes and cheddar cheese. it will take some getting used to, but i think i like them.

  1. I was wondering if i was close to some ripe berries. The chedder cheese taste sounds interesting. I think we have different varieties, didn't you say yours had fuzzy leaves?

  2. Ooh that is interesting! And the taste totally sounds like my personal snack heaven--strawberries, tomatoes AND cheese?! How do these grow (bush, tree, etc?)

  4. goneferal--the ones i grew last year had fuzzy leaves, but not the ones this year. i tried to germinate some seeds from the immature fruits i harvested at the end of last season but none came up. i'm still bummed about it. i think we're probably growing the same kind.

    bumble lush--they're kind of a low-growing, sprawling bush. the growth habit seems to be a lot like tomatillos, to which they're related, but on a smaller scale.

    potted farm--yeah, it's a really odd combination! it's mostly the strawberry-tomato blend, the cheddar flavor is subtle.
